ArtPrize, Woven In, and the Road to Ox-Bow | Weave of Life

Meditative Moment

Take a breath. Think of something small you’ve kept after a meaningful day. A ticket stub, a program, a pressed flower. Hold that memory for a moment.

Dear friends,

ArtPrize is over for the year, but it isn’t leaving the Weave.

This week I’ve been cutting up the ArtPrize event guide, the very map that led so many of you to Monroe Community Church. It’s becoming petals and leaves now. On one piece you can still read “9. Monroe Community Church,” the stop where about 280 panels hung together for the first time.

That’s how Weave of Life works. The things we’d usually toss after an event hold a memory, so I keep them and weave them back in. Those few weeks in Grand Rapids will live inside these new panels.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to stand with the work, ask questions, and share your stories with me. You’re part of these panels now too.

The next adventure

I’ll be off to Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan, for their Slow Season Residency. It’s a week tucked between the woods and the water, set aside for nothing but the work.

While I’m there, I plan to gather what the woods and shoreline offer, and to test how new materials and textures come together in the larger arrangements.

Over the past year, Weave of Life has moved from my living room to a shared studio to a gallery wall. This week is about asking what it wants to become next.

I’ll write to you from Ox-Bow with photos, quiet moments, and whatever the work teaches me.

I’m deeply grateful to the Indiana Arts Commission. This residency is part of my 2026 On-Ramp Fellowship, and their belief in this work means a great deal.

This activity is made possible in part by the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana.

Have a wonderful day,
Nancy Fritz

Calm Ox-Bow lagoon with clear blue sky being mirrored in the water.

Meditative Moment Imagine sitting at the end of a dock. Water still beneath you, trees on the far shore. Nothing to do. Nowhere to be. Just breathe here for a moment. Ox-Bow Lagoon from the dock Dear friends, In my last letter, I left you on the dock by the lagoon at Ox-Bow with a question my coach had given me: If I let go of the idea that being productive means making something to sell, how else could I define productive? I sat there a long time, watching the water. Then I opened my...

Ox-Bow Inn

Meditative Moment Picture a road lined with trees just beginning to turn. Gold at the edges, green still holding on. Let yourself slow down to that pace for a moment. Ox-Bow Lagoon from the dock. I’m home from Ox-Bow, and I’ve been waiting to write until I could find the words. While I was there, I chose to live the experience rather than translate it. This is the first of three letters about that week. The drive was about three hours from Fort Wayne. The leaves were just starting to turn and...

Triangular Weave of Life panel made from a 2004 college sketch, Nancy Fritz.

In art school, you draw from life constantly. Still lifes. Botanical compositions. And figure drawing, a live model in the room, a timer counting down, your hand moving as fast as your eye. No overthinking. Just looking and mark-making, over and over, until you start to actually see. These drawings were not meant to be precious. They are practice. They teach your hand to respond before your brain can second-guess it. You do dozens in a single session and most of them go in the recycling bin...
